Welcome to 2012…and by the way..if you didn’t know…we are getting married this year!

Hats off to you all as we enter 2012!  I do dare to stick my tongue out at all the believers who think that December 21 2012, will be the end of the world according to the Mayans.  Greg and I believe it will be the most FUN had by all of our family and friends who come to join us at our wedding, that very day.

WOW, I have not sat down and made the time to blog since April of 2011!  My apologies it was a busy later half of the year, so let me take the time to get you all caught up on the lives of Greg and Wendy out here in the Peace Country.

Greg just got through another busy Christmas season at Peace River Broadcasting, putting in many hours on the weekend making sure all the local businesses had their Seasons Greetings played on the air waves.  Needless to say it was a pleasure this Christmas to have so much time off due to the Stat Holidays falling on a weekend.  Two long weekends, we relished in the days of getting to sleep in.  Greg is still very happy with his radio position here in Peace River, though is keeping his eyes open as to where we move to next in 2012.  We cannot narrow down an exact province, city or town until the right job opportunity falls in his lap, but we will keep you posted as we look this year towards another move and settling in yet another home.  Good thing I love to pack and redecorate!  Greg on the other hand…leaves most of both the packing and decorating to me!

After the school year at Northern Lakes College wrapped up and I completed my practicum in Social Work at the Hospital I was very fortunate to land an opportunity of a life time.   I was able to get a full-time mat-leave contract position at the Peace River Hospital as a Recreational Therapy Aide.  I have put school on hold and have been loving my new line of work working with the elderly.  It truly was a blessing, I NOW, good thing after 10 years..know  exactly what career I would like in my future and now can streamline my education to pursue a rewarding line of work.  I did not know that there is a job out there where I look forward to every morning going to work. I cannot tell you how much I love my job.

For those of you who don’t know, Recreation Therapy in a Hospital or Nursing Home environment is well, I like to call it, entertainment and activity for the elderly or those needing assisted care.  Each day is different, we participate in a variety of activities, everything from Bingo and baking, to scrapbooking, sing along or a to a trip to Walmart.  I learn every day so much from the residents in terms of stages of the aging process to learning to appreciate life and the little things.  AND! I am very proud to say that I have brought to the Peace River Recreational Program a painting class.  I have been instructing my own painting classes with the residents once a month and I am receiving so much acclamation from family, staff and doctors.  I have been framing the art work that the residents have done and we started our own wall of art work fame.   I very much look forward to pursing further education  in Recreational Therapy,  though I have to admit when we leave Peace River, my heart will very much miss all the residents I work with every day.

Other than that! Both of us are working 9 to 5 Monday to Friday jobs now so we are both enjoying the normal life of evenings and weekends together.  We have been playing squash, or very badly trying anyway every Wednesday, and there is new Yoga studio that has opened up here in Peace River, Greg has ‘said’ that he will join me in some classes this year.  I still swim at the pool and for Christmas this year we treated ourselves to a new Xbox Kinect, so I have been dancing and doing the Zumba and together we have been virtual skiing, having snow ball fights at the virtual Disneyland and Greg does Kung Fu.  This is all to get us healthy and in shape for the “Big Day” you see.

The kids Chico and Stimpy are fine…though Chico got most his teeth removed this fall as he had an accident and had some teeth knocked out, but the vet said most of them were rotting out his mouth anyway….and Stimpy still has an ongoing skin rash, allergies or something, and a bad attitude.  Any cat whispers out there? I am determined to fix this cat’s bad reaction to when people come over before the children are born….did Greg hear that? Haha!

We still don’t have enough snow out here for the local Ski Hill to open….but I have been praying to the snow Gods to get us on those slopes soon.  I have made a resolution this year to blog more, take more photos and enjoy Northern Alberta as you never know when our crazy trek out here will end.

We are very much looking forward to our wedding and very much miss all of your wonderful faces.  Greg and I were very spoiled this year and we thank all of our family for such wonderful gifts and so much support.  2012 will be another big year of change!   So let’s get crackin huh?

I hope you enjoy some of the photos…going all the way back to the summer….Love and Hugs to all, Greg and Wendy from Peace River.

Spring has Sprung! The Peace River Breaks…

Happy Easter! Happy Spring!  It has been quite some time since we posted last!  School has kept me busy, writing what seems like a million papers and over a million words.  However everything has been handed in and all the exams have been written, I’m proud to say that I have maintained a solid year with no mark below an A!  I still have a month of Practicum hours to complete, I will going back to the Hospital here in Peace River Monday to Friday and at the radio station on the weekends…Busy times for the next month!  It will be June before we know it and Greg’s folks, Greg Sr. and Debbie are coming for a visit! It should be nice and green by then and Rodeo season starts!  YAHOO!

It seems like winter has lasted FOREVER!  It has only been in the last few weeks that spring has sprung out here in the Peace Country.  The river was frozen solid right up until last week with news coverage daily on when the water was going to break. It truly is a big deal out here…being that Peace River had so much snow this year there are still fears of a flood.  Hence, the River Evacuation Signs that I took a picture of when we first arrived.  Which reminds me, it has been a year to the date that Greg and I arrived here in Peace River Alberta!  My, oh my, how much has changed!

Greg is still the Producer of awesomeness at the Radio station, his voice is heard all over the radio waves doing many voices of the commercials, half of the time I don’t even recognize his voice!

I too have ventured into the land of radio, and not just as the “Summer Fun Cruiser” girl.  I’m actually on the air every weekend…until they kick me off that is…you can hear me from 12pm to 6pm every Saturday and Sunday over the summer on the Country Station, YL Country. It’s a good thing I love country music!  It has taken hours of sweating and a lot of getting used to and I am surprised that Gregory has stayed with me through all the stress!

I turned 35 over the Easter weekend…WOW times flies…and Greg would like to remind everyone of his birthday coming up May 21st (wink wink).  Greg is coming back to Ontario for a visit in August, I’m sure he is going to try and see as many friends and family as he possibly can.  I’ve resolved to stay here over the summer, work and save up some money and look after the furry kids.  I’m not too concerned because when I do get back to Ontario it will be time for a BIG PARTY…OUR WEDDING!  We have decided on a Christmas Wedding (it is my most favorite time of the year!).   The date couldn’t get much closer to Christmas…December 21, 2012 and the Ceremony/Reception will be in Ancaster Ontario.   One more year of Social Work school left for me and then who knows what will happen to us next??

We took some photos over the weekend when we finally ventured out for a spring walk to go and look for wildlife with my snazzy new binoculars Greg got me!

Hope spring has finally sprung where all of you are, here is to finally some sunshine and lollipops huh?

A Canadiana Experience

Good Winter Times Folks!  It has been cold out here, let’s be honest.  I never thought I would see the digital thermometer in the car read minus 35 but it has become a morning norm.  We really have had weather that has been back and forth in terms of warm and cold.  February has been plus 5 one week with the snow melting and then minus 35 the next.  It makes for awful road and sidewalk conditions!  Greg made a joke the other day…”I’m taking the car in today”…for what? I ask annoyed…”to have handles put on the outside”…as I realize the slow time it takes me to get to the passenger side door as I lean and hold the car…sliding.

The winter months have gone by pretty slow and cold except for the highlights which are as follows, so far:

We went tobogganing one night and it was so icy I, Wendy, wiped out so bad Greg said “it just looked like a bunch of legs and arms landing” I bruised my arse, arms and back so bad it looked like I had been in a car accident, I had a bruise on me arse the size of a dessert plate.  I don’t think I will toboggan again anytime soon.

Skiing has been wonderful except for when it is so cold that your face has frozen solid by the time you reach the bottom, but we both enjoy it.  We experienced the best part of living in Northern Canada when Greg participated in the nations largest pond hockey tournament in Lac Cardinal just 2o minutes north of us.  Greg, who has never played hockey before, managed to score a goal and an assist!  It was so awesome!  Picture 7 o’clock at night, dark black, minus 33 and a frozen lake.  8 rinks, a Zamboni, floodlights, a great beer tent, a band playing The Tragically Hip and a lot of hockey jerseys.  Truly fantastic!  Greg was brave enough to play on the ice for 30 minutes, I lasted 10 minutes out there to snap a couple of photos.  “Come on Greg, when else will you have the chance to play hockey out here!” I screamed to cheer him on against the bleeding cold.

Other than that I watched a moose up on the hill in the bush for about 20 minutes the other day from the comfort of my warm car.  I was waiting for the big mama moose to move for a photo….but nope, she saw me and I watched her…stale mate.  There is no good way to let wildlife know you just want a good photo op.

Life is good. Simple and sweet.  Miss all of you out there and I don’t know about you but we are looking forward to spring!  Much Love from the River of the Peace….

A Vivacious and Humbley Wonderful New Year 2011

Good Day Folks!

I hope this New Year of 2011 finds you in good spirits…..

Looking back on 2010, WOW what a year of changes! For so many of us…I remember Sam, Thea and I talking about that in the office of Fionn’s…and what a year it has turned out to be!

I went from a downtown Toronto patio to a northern Alberta full time Social Work Student.  Gregory went from a 7 year Toronto hard workin’ movie, TTC rider, to a Full Time, Car Owning, Radio Producer….again in northern Alberta.  How the heck did we get here????? With the help and love and support from all of YOU!

We made it through Christmas with much love and fun with the folks who stayed with us in Peace River; the misfits from the land of Radio out here.  I cooked my first ever FRESH turkey from the Hutterite Colony near by. (Yes it was cleaned and feathered when I got it!)  But it really was the best turkey we have ever had! It literally fell off the bone, SPLENDID!

To tell you a story of yuletide joy in the middle of cleaning and stuffing the bird on Christmas morning, Greg popped the question!!…I cried from the joy but also from not being able to put the ring on until I washed my hands!  We are proud to announce our “Engagement!”

We had very Merry Christmas with friends from the radio station who came and to enjoy the feast. The boys went tobogganing after supper and we all sang karaoke “Sing Star” until midnight!  It really was a great day!! (being so far from home!)

I’ve attached some photos of the season, and of our kids Chico and Stimpy as well.  PLEASE NOTE< WE DON’T ADVOCATE PUTTING YOUR CAT IN A PLASTIC BAG! Our cat just loves them!  I don’t have much of the weather this post.  But really; picture a white canvas…that’s it!  All snow…minus 30…good times!  I’ve noticed that in the parking lot of the grocery store all the cars are running with no one in them, no one shuts off their car???

Love and miss you all….send us a story!   We miss home very much and even though we are faithfully taking our vitamin D daily, we are starting to get cabin/cottage fever!  From the River, much Peace, xo.

Holiday Peace from the River 2010

Well here it is FINALLY Christmas time!

And I just said to Greg last night; this is the happiest I have been since I can remember!  I know we are both missing all of you, and nothing would make the holiday more wonderful.

We are so lucky, with the help of FAMILY and friends support!

Last weekend I was privileged to see Greg almost front row centre for the last night of “Tom, Dick and Harry”.  I had heard all the talk but I was most impressed and overly surprised at his overwhelming talent!  The cast had a very deserving standing ovation, and I overheard some comments in the crowd, he was the comic of the night.  What a fantastic play!  The entire cast was impressive and I only look forward to the next theatrical extravaganza!  This is definitely a bonus to being here in Peace River…..small towns ROCK!   SO DOES GREG!!!!

All the exams are written, papers are graded and done…I impressed myself with my marks…thank goodness…I am on the right track!

I don’t think I was able to tell you about the lighting of the Christmas lights in the park downtown due to the bustle of exams…but literally I felt like I was in a movie.  I went with some lovely girls from school and their kids,  we watched the Santa Claus Parade and the town park had the school choirs singing….snow was falling, you could line up for free hot dogs or hot chocolate……there were fireworks as they lit up the park with Christmas sparkle.  It was fantastic!

Lots of snow has fallen here…and yes it is cold too.  Minus 20 seems to now be warm.  I have tried to take various pictures of weather activity around these parts.  It changes so fast, but I have to admit I never get tired of the changing skies in the morning. We have found the block heater in our new car and so it becomes a habit now when we park to plug it in!

Stimpy has been keeping us on our toes during this season of decorating as he won’t leave the tree or the presents alone.  Chico on the other hand,  well you will see the outfits,  it has become such a challenge to even get him to set foot out the door!

I am so looking forward to this Christmas break, Greg and I are going to try out the local ski hill, and we have the radio orphans joining us for Christmas dinner.  Boy o Boy..I am picking up my fresh turkey from the Hutterite Colony on the 23 rd!  God wish me luck on my lavish Christmas dinner I have planned!

Much love to you all…..we miss the bustle of downtown, and the suburbs for that matter…but in Peace River no matter how much it snows you only have to drive 10 minutes, so we are counting our blessings.  Greg and I both are enjoying Peace River, but we miss you more than you know!  We have Skype access this year…web cam a ready, so don’t hesitate to give us a call!

Happy Holidays and a Scrumptous New Year!

…..and  I think  Stimpy had sugar plums dancing in his head…….

Is it Christmas yet?

Oh…I just can’t WAIT for Christmas…I wait for it all year-long, and right after Halloween I wait everyday with anticipation….can I decorate the house yet????!!!

I thought I would get some photos up from Halloween as time is flying by fast with school, wait didn’t I already say that??? OY!  Before I know it we will be leaving Peace River, that is why I try to take so many pictures!

I am happy to report with midterms, that I am still a stellar student (eyah! must be because I love it!), and I am starting my practicum next week at the Peace River Community Health Centre, (Peace River’s hospital) and I am SOOOO EXCITED! I get to work with the Aboriginal liaison Coordinator and dive right into medical social work! Added to the centre is a long-term care facility so I will be able to get some experience with the elderly as well.  There is a LOT of red tape to be able to work at the Hospital in terms of liabilities with students etc…so there was much hard work done by my Instructor to get me in there…and I am so grateful!  Unfortunately I can’t tell you too much about it all over this here internet due to confidentiality, just know that what I am doing is AWESOME!

Greg is in full rehearsal for the play that premieres November 26th, “Tom, Dick and Harry”, and he is still a little nervous but after each practice he gets more excited.  He gets to do some singing in this (in a chorus not solo), and practice some physical comedy,  from the sounds of what he is telling me it will be great!  And it is being filmed so let me know if you want a copy in your Christmas stocking!  In the spring there is talk of the next play being a musical, either “Sweeney Todd” or “The Producers”,  I said to Greg he could get his “Glee” on!! ( we both cringe at Glee the show by the way, sorry for all you fans), but oddly enough Greg said he would be into trying out,  lets be honest, he really wants to sing “Springtime for Hitler”.

The weather has literally been up and down, one week there is snow and the next is chinook like prevailing winds of warmth, and it was up to 15 degrees last week.   It is daylight savings this weekend and I am getting a little wary because at 9 AM NOW (before the time change) the sun is just starting to come up!  That is when I notice the dark the most, it gets dark at night at about 6 PM.   The skies in the morning are wonderful, please see the pictures, and at night they are full of stars.  And OH! the deer..everywhere, all the time, herds of them.  Did I mention  the Ravens or Crows, whichever you prefer to call them? You know how seagulls by the seaside are bigger than the city dwellers?  Well I am not kidding you they are HUGE here! When chico and I are out for a walk I tell him to “hurry up, or that big crow will come take you away!”

Counting down the days to Christmas…..love and miss you all TONS!

First snowfall

Hey Folks!

Yup,there is snow already here, not very much, it did not stay on the ground,  but where we live in the valley beside the river, there was very little snow,  but if you drive up the hill, say to Walmart, there was much more snow…..I think this is the trend for winter.

Just thought I would post some pics of Stimpy and the weather while I have the chance.  School is keeping me very busy,  I am starting to get some grades back and it’s all A’s…so far.  I have just wrote my midterms though, I forgot how much work studying is!  But I am loving my Program and I look forward to more!  Greg is doing great with work and rehearsing his play which goes ‘live’ in November.  We made a trip into Grande Prairie to see “Jackass 3D” and I have to admit,  it made me literally sick,  but was very funny.  I think the next trip will be for “Tron 3D”, and a sleigh ride for me!! (they have sleigh rides in the christmas lights…i’m so excited!)…

Love you all lots, give us any updates if you have them,  we think of everyone often!

Stimpy in the Tub

Stimpy likes to play in the tub, in fact he creeps in there and waits in the tub, and when you come in to do your business, he jumps out at you as you go to grab the tiolet paper.  Scares the ^&*%$ right out of you, literally!

It is Moose Hunting season here, sad but true, wildlife is everywhere.

I would gooble, that Greg and I are most thankful for everything this Thanksgiving…..”Stumpy Stimpy”,  Che-eeeeK! O, and all our friends and family back home, or all over the world where you are in our hearts!

October

Here it is October already….and the night is starting to creep for us around 8pm….quite a difference from the 11pm and 2am end that we started with out here.   Now it is just after supper when it gets dark…I guess I should be getting used to it.

School is going fantastic,  I have all A’s right now, mind you that is only 3 assignments, but I will milk that for as long as I can and remain proud of myself.   Greg is working hard learning lines for his play…and I can’t relate but  it must be stressful..I think he is his worst critic, arent’ we all? ….I know he will be fabulous.

The pool has opened again after a month of “resconstruction”, and I have dragged Greg along with me for the Grand Re-opening,  I cannot tell you how much I missed the swimming.

It is Moose Hunting Season right now….well I really mean to say it is  Hunting Season for everything really.  It makes me nervous as the animals seem antzy…and there are Bear warning signs up.  It is the Life Cycle is what I keep telling myself.

Thanksgiving is around the corner and we are having a community dinner with some friends from the radio station.   I am in charge of vegetables so if you have any recipes please send them! I wish all of your tables to be plentiful and filled with love…miss you from far away.

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone,   “Rub a Dub Dub, Thanks for the Grub, YEAH JESUS!”

In Full Bloom

Hi Folks,  wanted to post something before school got too busy and before my favorite season of Autumn turns quickly into Winter.  Last week felt like old man Winter was here already,  it was minus 5 one morning and we used our automatic car starter for the first time.  I must say that will be a God sent in the middle of January,  I have never been able to come out to the car and get in it all warm and defrosted!  Makes me miss a little bit  the shaking and finger defrosting as you listen to radio and wait for the car to warm up….NOT!

The Autumn leaves are in full colour out here,  and as I posted some pictures and looked back some months….WOW, what a change it has been!  Believe it or not, now I am looking forward to seeing a blanket of snow,  I think for the photography alone.  However,  I may have to wait until January, the locals say it does not snow very much out here, and seeing as we had such a awful drought this summer, I wonder if we will get any snow!

I have been very busy with school, being a dedicated student and reading and working everyday, but I still make time for walking and swimming.  Greg is busy at work,  and he is doing FANTASTIC!  Moving into Production full force and hopefully his weekends will be free soon!  His commercials are wonderfully funny, I wish more of you were here to listen to local radio to hear them.  Adding to the excitement, working on his play performance of  “Tom, Dick and Harry”, coming this November!   We are keeping busy and out of trouble you might say!

Some of the pictures I have posted today were taken at Wilderness Park where I went for a day Dog walk to raise money for the SPCA, it was a beautiful day.  Oh and I almost forgot to mention that I went to a Hutterite Colony last week…what an experience….I will have to tell you about that next time….

Love you and miss you all! xo
